The CanSkate program is the only “Learn to Skate” program needed to accommodate all ages. Skaters will be introduced to all the fundamental movements of skating:
Go Forward - Go Backward - Stop - Turn - Jump - Spin
Every fundamental movement has 6 stages of difficulty. Skaters may move between stages and fundamental movements at their own pace.
The placement of CHALLENGE skills in each stage will introduce your skaters to some Powerskating moves, Synchro moves and Figure Skating moves. Challenge skills are not mandatory. These skills will be presented to the skaters if they have a desired interest.
Skaters will be moving across the skills grid horizontally and vertically.
Both Go Forwards and Go Backwards required skaters to complete all skills. Stop, Jump, Turn and Spin allow a little more freedom if the skater cannot or has no desire to complete all the skills. For example a skater who is learning to skate so he/she can play hockey or go into Powerskating may not be interested in completing the Spin Award. That is ok. He/she can still complete their Stages without the spin component. This layout will allow skaters to move more quickly and receive many more awards and incentives. Skaters will still be assessed on a daily basis.
